I needed the clearly stated message in this book. I read it in one sitting. I started drinking with my husband of 43 years on our first date. I always just thought it was what people did though I always ended up falling down drunk and none of our drinking partners did. Everyone just said I was cute and funny when drunk. So I stupidly continued. Now that I'm over 60 it isn't so funny anymore. In fact it was never funny. But I still couldn't stop. Whether I was alone or with a crowd I drank always thinking it was an innocent act. After reading loads of books about drinking, lives of drinkers, alcoholism, how to stop drinking, why I should stop etc. I still didn't quit drinking no matter how much I wanted to. I never really got the message in my soul of what alcohol was doing to me and my life. Finally this book lays it out in a language I can understand. It is a short and concise explanation of why I started drinking and how it eventually hooked me and exactly what it takes to stop. Thank you for writing it. It will be my "go to" bible everyday until my subconscious mind is retrained to be in alignment with my whole hearted desire to live a joyous alcohol free life.

I’m a healthcare professional who has struggled with problem drinking for years. For many years I had wanted to decrease my alcohol use, but was unable to be a one or two drink drinker. The habit of nightly alcohol use was ingrained over several decades of regular use. I’m not religious, nor did I wish to share my story with others given my profession, so AA was not for me. I didn’t accept the “disease” model of alcohol dependency, nor was I able to connect with cognitive behavioral therapy. What I DID understand was science, and that’s exactly where this terrific book piqued my interest and played to my intellect.The author methodically explains the psychological, social and especially the physiological effects of alcohol in a way that literally set off a lightbulb in my brain. As I pored over each chapter, I kept shaking my head in agreement, identifying, almost to the T, what I felt when I drank alcohol, and more importantly, how I felt the next day. I would even cross-check some of my long-forgotten physiology to ensure the information was scientifically sound. It was.I planned a four-day, self-imposed solo “detox” at a cabin the woods, where I was away from the distractions of life and family, and where I could cleanse my mind, body and soul. The only book on alcohol cessation I brought with me was Alcohol Explained. After 3-hour morning hikes, I would read in the afternoon and think in the evenings. Porter’s post-alcohol sleep predictions were spot on. The first couple of nights were rough.I read the book twice on my mini sabbatical and didn’t touch alcohol. Upon returning home, I felt not only physically renewed, I felt mentally empowered to continue my sobriety. I did struggle with cravings, and would reference the book frequently, bookmarking relevant passages. Unfortunately, I lapsed back into regular alcohol use after a weekend trip with friends. The bottom line for me anyway, was that there is no such thing as just one drink, something the author mentions time and again. Luckily, I’m off of alcohol once again and feel great.For people who cannot identify with the spirituality of AA, or for whom the psychobabble of CBT just doesn’t resonate, this book is a thoughtful, well-reasoned and scientifically sound examination of how alcohol affects the mind and body, and how you can use that knowledge to break away from the negative physical, social and psychological affects of dependency. As a highly educated professional, I can’t say enough about Alcohol Explained. It quite literally, changed my life.

This book answered for me some questions I I could not answer for myself or explain to my close ones:Why, having everything in life to be happy, and everything to lose, am I still drinking, even after a serious diagnosis?Why, having quit once and truly forgetting about it, then restarting briefly, quitting the second time doesn't work so well?Why is the professional advice to gradually cut down to one unit a day wrong?Why is there no such thing as just one drink, or just one night, and then I'll stop?Why does AA not work for me (or many others)?I want to thank this author for doing all the hard work and research to produce this most intelligent, easy-to-understand, and most of all, HELPFUL book. There are no "10 steps" or "Easy way" to anything, especially not this. But it is worth doing, if you want your life back.

So many excellent reviews on this groundbreaking publication have already been written on Amazon, so I will keep it short.As someone who has struggled with closet alcoholism since his mid-twenties and attended numerous AA meetings, this book finally gave me the insight I needed to understand the progression of the addiction cycle and impact on my life and most importantly, stop drinking. The format was very readable, given the nature of the research provided by the author, and also includes his personal experiences as an alcoholic. AA is a wonderful resource for those who believe in a higher power other than yourself. However, if you don't share this belief and have been searching for an alternative to guide your through recovery, I highly recommend this book. It has made all the difference for me!

I am a Substance Abuse Counselor and this is one of the best books on the subject of alcohol I've ever read. I'm almost done reading this, but skipped to the end so I could review it. He has explained what alcohol truly is (poison), how it affects the human body and how our minds learn to want it which, then, becomes the life long struggle of addiction. Mr. Porter explains addiction to alcohol using imagery anyone can understand and follow. I highly recommend this book to anyone at all with a connection to alcohol use, abuse, or addiction. I believe Mr. Porter said he's a lawyer, so I do have one question. Can I please use passages from your book with my clients?? Please!! They will be an asset in explaining how alcohol and their minds are working together to create their struggle to achieve and maintain sobriety. Thank, sir, for sharing this with us for free.

This book is unlike any other book I've read about alcohol. I'm only halfway through but I am amazed at all the things I didn't realize about it. I've read other books on how to stop but this doesn't focus on stopping as much as explaining it,... drew me to the conclusion that I really want to stop
