This book provides a realistically description of the CM world. It is obvious that the author has really lived in this world and the issues he describes come directly from his experience and surprisingly frank and humorous. The book is a fun read.The author has the rare skill of understanding the impact of decisions at both the ground level where the professional employees at CMs deal with it on a daily basis and at the 10,000 foot level of upper management and the drivers of the out sourcing industry.The list of players who would benefit from reading the book includes:CM management and Owners - especially at smaller CMs - BUY IT! You will get a ROI from your antacid savings aloneProfessional employees who plan to work at a CM - being naive is never an advantageEngineers and Project managers at OEMs - knowing what really goes down will help you protect your project and companyEmployees at startups and Inventors - if they don't return your phone call, you'll know why.I will be loaning out this book to several friends...As a last note - while the author is a joint founder of a consulting firm providing services in the CM world it is to his credit that he does not spend a significant amount of type hyping his business (as is common in other books).
There are no surprises in this book, but it's right on the mark about the latest Supply Chain developments and might be valuable for that purpose. I thought it was a actually fun read, a Saturday morning over 3 coffees, not a tome to study. I didn't want to put it down. It surveys the industries affected, defines terms if you unfamiliar, and then lays the stage for the Buyer/Seller relationships and how to make money (maybe!). It would be more common to say in your head "You're SO right" a hundred times while reading. At times, it made me think it was a first-hand account of an experienced executive who got totally burned out in the supply chain as the Seller, written right after he got fired over something. It is indeed a first-hand account by an experienced professional who's been there and lived it. A good, quick, read...then pass it on to your buddies in the supply chain grinder and commisserate; or discuss the main points and set out a strategy to improve with this as background. Bottomline: A good value for the price.
Good read for those in the industry although some points were oversimplified. The author states that manufactures won't start any work until they get a PO even if you authorize materials. This is often true and Sarbanes Oxley supposedly helps enforce that with public companies; but in reality this is often negotiable and depends on your relationship and how much leverage you have.
Excellent insight into how contract manufacturing works and even just the first chapter provides a clear understanding of the important terminology and concepts.
