I loved this novel for many reasons. First, as well written, multicultural fiction about a Palestinian family and the two American women who marry into it , it has very strong appeal for me. It is so rare to find believable, three-dimensional, compelling characters who are Palestinian in Western literature. As someone married to an Arab from the Gulf, I often search for good characterization in novels that deal with the Arab world, but sadly, I find mostly stereotypes. Finally, a novel that doesn't have terrorism as a theme! This novel destroys stereotypes and presents real, believable American and Palestinian characters with all their hopes and dreams, conflicts and fears, all within one family . It made me want to cheer. The conflicts that Margaret, Allison and Zainab, the three main characters, face with their individual lives as part of the Mansour family are so real to me. As I read, I kept saying, "Yes!" Yes!" That's exactly right! The author hit the nail on the head!" At the same time, I was swept up in their personal lives and family conflicts, which are emotionally heart-rending and poignant. The family has very strong bonds, which is so true in the Arab world, where family is EVERYTHING. When the family matriarch, Zainab, loses her husband and moves to American to live with her American daughter-in-law, Margaret, you can imagine the problems. Compounding that, the youngest, somewhat irresponsible son, Khalid marries an American he meets in college, who has some Arab blood and is majoring in Middle East studies. But they marry for the wrong reasons, and her intellectual knowledge about the Arab world doesn't equip her to deal with the reality of living in the constant company of her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sisters-in-law. I find the matriarch, Zainab, very well drawn and sympathetic. As a recent widow, a religious Muslim, and a non-English speaker, Zainab has to deal with living in a suburb of Seattle, with daughters in law who don't understand her and strange American customs she can't relate to or comprehend. Family tensions build as the three women grapple with the need to preserve their individual needs for understanding, validation, privacy, and marital harmony. The mounting tension of the narrative arc is very well done. I really enjoyed the evocative glimpses of Palestinian culture we get throughout the novel--delicious food, scents of jasmine, beautiful cross-stitch-embroidered thobes, interesting religious customs, eid celebrations, the celebratory dancing of the dabke at a wedding in Amman replete with songs and ululations, and a harrowing look at a Palestinian refugee camp when Allison visits her husband's relatives in the West Bank. It is so rare to see these things in Western fiction, which obstinately focuses on terrorist bombs and shouting masses. It moved me to see the richly drawn, true to life characters in this novel living out their fascinating daily lives with all their dreams and conflicts, as well as trying to find their own personal space in a large, tightly knit family. I recommend the book highly.
This is a beautifully written story with incredibly well-developed characters. There have been so many books that cover the immigrant/intercultural experience but in my view, Where Jasmine Blooms, truly stands out as it shows us what life looks like back home, the cultural nuances and the relationship dynamics that help form how and what immigrants experience in their new land. The book is at the same time universal as it traces family relationships, love, regret, anger, and how different people handle these emotions differently. Loved it and would recommend it wholeheartedly.
This book opened my eyes about the plight of the Palestinians. I loved the great characters and the story held my interest. Since I am not friends with anyone from the Middle East, I have no idea if the family depicted here is typical, but I imagine they are. The writer did a great job of making me feel like I was a part of the blended family in the heart of the story. Americans live so differently, so it was wonderful to be a part of this Arab family for awhile.
Marriage is always an adventure in compromise, as two individuals combine their lives and create a new family. But when one’s partner comes from a large, close-knit, culturally salient family, marriage brings extra challenges and many bonuses. As one character puts it, “We didn’t marry the man, we married the clan!â€In Where Jasmine Blooms, readers experience life in the Mansour family through the eyes of 20-year veteran Margaret, newlywed Allison, and their delightfully grumpy Palestinian mother-in-law, Zainab. Travel from the suburbs of Seattle, Washington, to Amman, Jordan, and through Israeli checkpoints to West Bank refugee housing. Celebrate the intimate joys and struggles of marriage in all its stages, including engagement, childbirth, and mourning for a beloved partner. And learn about Palestinian culture, foods, rituals, history, and common Arabic phrases. I love these characters, their story, and their devotion to family.Where Jasmine Blooms explores universal themes of family and culture, and allows us to glimpse real lives in three dimensions. The author writes with an authentic, polished voice, and much personal affection for her subjects. I highly recommend this heart-warming, thought-provoking novel.
