Review

"A truly unique and excellent addition to the literature from the Pali texts. Great Disciples is a rich sourcebook, offering lucid stories and translations and brilliant scholarship, all visibly crafted with a love of the Dhamma." (Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart)"The living tradition of Buddhism is the linkage of spiritual friendships that bring us all the way back to the Buddha. Here are the stories of his early disciples, the men and women who studied with him directly, and who can inspire us all to the power and depth of spiritual friendship." (Sharon Salzberg, author of Faith and Lovingkindness)"This is one of the most inspiring books a serious Buddhist practitioner can read. It provides many examples of the humanity of the Buddha and his followers and relieves our fears that enlightenment erases individuality. It shows us how our individual human talents and aspirations can be purified by deep and continuous practice to produce extraordinary benefit for ourselves and others." (Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi, Great Vow Zen Monastery)"An enlightening look at the Buddha's sangha as archetypal model..." (Inquiring Mind)"This book is a wonderful addition to our understanding of the culture of awakening. In a way that is both scholarly and inspiring, it brings to life the struggles, practice, and realization of the great disciples of the Buddha. Through the book's many stories and teachings, we begin to connect their spiritual journeys with our own." (Joseph Goldstein, author of A Heart Full of Peace and co-founder, Insight Meditation Society)"A fascinating glimpse of life in ancient India at the time of the Buddha. The disciples came from diverse backgrounds, with different talents for us to emulate as well as weaknesses to overcome. I found reassurance from learning that their struggles were not that different from my own." (Larry Rosenberg, director, Cambridge Insight Meditation Center)"I am grateful for the publication of this book. With great admiration for and trust in the authors, I recommend The Great Disciples of the Buddha to friends and students alike." (Thich Nhat Hanh, author of Living Buddha, Living Christ)"Fascinating and valuable, inspirational and encouraging, these are stories to read again and again..." (Booknews)"Delivers an inspiring confirmation of the human potential for awakening and spiritual transformation." (Wisconsin Bookwatch)"When three highly accomplished dharma practitioners collaborate to bring their encyclopedic knowledge to bear on a particular topic, the result will be a landmark work like Great Disciples of the Buddha. It is edited by Bhikkhu Bodhi with his own contributions together with an extremely useful introduction. The authors reveal their ability to see the great spiritual truths behind these stories. They skillfully show how each of the Buddha's great disciples is an individual in his own right with characteristics that distinguish them from the rest: Ananda's gentleness and loyalty, Mahakassapa's seriousness and love of solitude, Sariputta's concern for the well-being of the Sangha, for example. Great Disciples of the Buddha is not just a collection of biographies. While it can be read by the casual reader, the serious seeker will receive a great deal of Dharma instruction because the writers aspects of the Teachings in a manner appropriate for a modern audience. Monumental." (Eastern Horizon)

I would have liked a little more detail on the temptation of Ananda as his human failings is what makes him so endearing, but it think this is currently the best book available on the disciples. This is a cornerstone book--if you study the Buddhist teachings, you will encounter these names and it is very helpful to have an idea about the people. The intro. has surprisingly good summary on the division of the teachings and gives an oversight for the organization of the Buddhist teachings. It can help you sort out what direction you want to take in your studies when you have a name of the Sutra to look up. I found the description of what killed Buddha and his funeral arrangement to be really interesting as were a brief mention of Possible teachers of the Buddha. There are so many hidden gems along the way, a description of the ideal husband and ideal wife, How a good man could be duped into becoming a serial killer. There are many Karmic examples of how our intentional actions can affect us in the long run. It's deepened my outlook on the suffering that exists. This is a good book I will refer to many times in my studies. Good luck in your learning adventures.

An exemplary book! Any who has wondered about the monks of old closest to the Buddha, whether from reading the suttas and wondering about the names mentioned in many of them or if you just wish to know more about the disciples. The authors did an amazing skillful deed by compiling all known information, from the Pāli text that is, about these Venerable Masters. You will find disciples ranging from Mahāmogallana and Sāriputta, the chief disciples, to Ānanda and Mahākassapa, the ones who looked after the first Buddhist council and some of the closest people to the Buddha. Anybody who has an interest in the teachings must read this book.

As one can expect from this author and publisher, this book deserves a place on your bookshelf. Most of the books in this series are quite expensive whereas this one can occasionally be found in the under $20 category if you have patience and a little time. A great reference that gives life to many of those hard to pronounce names encountered when studying The Pali Canon or other books in general about Buddhism and its teachings.

I'm enjoying it. It's wonderful to hear about these dedicated people.

As a student of Theravada ... I truly have to thank Bhikkhu Bodhi for the opportunities to enjoy this beautiful literature.

The book collects information both from the Canon and from commentaries to give a full account of the individuals that were closer to the Buddha in his lifetime. Quite naturally most of the accounts regard the period BEFORE enlightenment, for those that eventually got there as the list includes people in most parts of the path (Arahat, Anagamin, Ekagamin, Sotapatti) including Mallika, wife of King Pasanadi, which not even entered it.

Being myself practitioner of the tibetan Mahayana Buddhism I always felt a deep sense of devotion and fascination for our root guru, Lord Buddha Shakyamuni and the original holy Sangha. Now thanks to the combination of translations of Nyanaponika Thera, Hellmut Hecker, and the corrections and editing of Bhikkhu Bodhi, we have in our hands this great work.Although the texts of the Pali tradition are typically a dense reading, dry and dull, wich approaches teachings and practices from the external basic level, this compilation of deeds of the lives of the Discipules shows us the way of living of these Arhats, and the relationship with his Guru and with each other, about their own spiritual features , and the roles played by each one of them as humble servers of the Sangha and beings. We must be profoundly grateful an inspired by the Disciples which are examples for the buddhist of all over the world and also thankful to the authors for this spiritual and historical treasure which has been brought into the modern era. Before studying this book and the Sutta Pitaka, I especially recommend reading first The Life of the Buddha: According to the Pali Canon, by Bhikkhu Ñanamoli. The study will be more clear and reaeders will notice it.

ENLIGHTENING.
