Review

Praise for American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye   “A comprehensive and opinionated guide for the intermediate tippler . . . It’s a detailed, admirably cranky directory. Risen’s tasting notes for each are erudite and fun.” —Wall Street Journal   “Risen is something of a Renaissance man . . . a Leonardo da Vinci of whiskey. American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye . . . should have a proud place on the bookshelf (or by the bar) of anyone who is an enthusiast of bourbon and other American whiskeys. Very useful for shopping purposes . . . Bring this book with you.” —Los Angeles Review of Books   “Risen delicately walks readers into whiskey’s past, present, and future. . . . His words are meant for whiskey lovers, as he dissects every brand’s story and scores products on an NR (not recommended) to four-star scale. An American whiskey treasure worthy of four stars.” —Whiskey Advocate   “A whiskey novice’s best friend . . . It’s a book I plan on keeping around for constant reference.” —Saveur

I guess I should have paid more attention to the product description before I ordered. I'm in the early years of my Bourbon affair, so I've had maybe a few dozen different labels and I'm just starting to develop my palate to find and appreciate the more subtle differences and flavors. I saw this book on Amazon while I was searching for some other nick-nacks for my bar. I thought it would be a cool book to leave on the bar for some light browsing, but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice the book is and wound up reading it cover to cover twice already. The dimensions listed in the product description are accurate, but the stock pictures don't really do it justice. This is a beautifully bound hardcover book with pictures of the bottles, excellent reviews, and a great amount of history on the how the craft evolved in our country. I'll attach some pictures to give you a better idea of what I'm saying, but for $11.45 and free prime shipping, I'm tempted to order several more copies for all of my buddies that also appreciate a good pour. This is an excellent book and a great value.

This is a fun book. It starts with 70 pages about whiskey. What it is, how it is made, and the history of its ups and downs in America. The Whiskey Rebellion, excise taxes, prohibition, World War II, the decline of whiskey in the 70s and 80s, and the recent return to popularity. Then there are 200 pages about individual whiskey brands and expressions. Each whiskey is rated on a four star system and a brief description of the nose, color, body, palate, and general. I have a hard time detecting all of the flavors that he does. There are few paragraphs about each brand. If I were doing the ratings, I would rank some a little higher and some a little lower, but in general the ratings are useful. The author says it is for novice and intermediate whiskey drinkers – experience people already know what they like.It is an attractive book with pictures of each bottle. The font is smaller than necessary, and some people will really wish that it was larger.

U.S. whiskey history is informative, but largely focused around bourbon and Kentucky. History and information on rye whiskey is fleeting. Surprisingly, author devotes just a few paragraphs to the rye revival since 2005! Author is very biased against white whiskey & flavored whiskies, and contains no information about these sub-categories.Minimal information about distilleries, and rating system difficult to follow.Overall, information is useful for beginners & intermediate drinkers.Print appearance of pages is horrible - very, very difficult to read the very faint font. Doesn't the publisher have editors/proof readers who look at galley proofs before production?

I bought this book on an impulse. I am a huge fan of Bourbons and Amercian Whiskeys. I also liked the idea of being able to store it in my truck for those impromptu stops by the local spirits store. Overall the book is very nice. Solid binding and very thick pages. The books starts off with a brief introcduction to whiskey, bourbon and rye. It progresses into a nice database of the more popular whiskeys. The author includes tasting notes, color, and other typical information. The only downside is that some of the whiskeys listed did not have reviews on them or were "NR" for not rated (the reason I knocked it one star). Overall I would recommend for anyone with an interest in Amercian Whiskeys, Bourbons, and Ryes.

I love this book. Gives a history of where each brand of whiskey is from and how it's made and tastes and average cost of each bottle. It contains every bottle of whiskey sold in the market. A lot I have never heard of but after reading this, I have a good sense of what's involved in whiskey making and the history of it. It makes me more appreciate my spirits each time I take a sip of my drink.

Clears up a few misconceptions, makes choosing hard-to-find whiskies less risky, and draws connections between distilleries and their master blenders and related "house" styles. All in all, very useful, and less prone to repeat advertising ballyhoo. Enjoyable and reliable - not a bad combination. Add this to yur whiskey library soon!

This is a great resource for anyone who enjoys collecting or sampling various labels of whiskeys, bourbons, and ryes! I was skeptical of how I would line up with the author's reviews and tasting notes, but I've found that agree with the vast majority of this guide. Its even pushed me to try some whiskeys I'd never consider because of their respective labels or bottling/packaging.

Wow, what an enjoyable book. Purchased both the first and second edition. Enjoy the history, and detail for each Bourbon/Whiskey. It is an excellent barometer on what is good and what to stay away from. Everyone has their own taste, yet the book is very accurate in giving its opinion on the Whiskeys listed. Well lade out, and cannot wait for the third addition.
