From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—The Japanese American internment during World War II is the subject of National Book Award finalist Marrin's latest historical nonfiction for adolescents. He ties together chronological events with thematic elements (how racism operated during World War II) to tell the story of this dark time in U.S. history: "Our government failed in its duty to protect the rights of everyone living in the United States." Marrin demonstrates great attention to detail in conveying the experiences of Japanese Americans who were removed from their homes and forced to live in "relocation" centers, relying on interviews, speeches, newspaper articles, and official and personal correspondence from the time period. Of particular interest is the chapter on the Yankee Samurai, Japanese American war heroes who fought bravely for the United States while their families were denied freedom at home. Back matter includes an extensive list of suggested further reading. VERDICT Packed with details yet well organized and carefully annotated, this excellent treatment of a shameful episode in U.S. history is highly recommended for library collections serving teens.—Kelly Kingrey-Edwards, Blinn Junior College, Brenham, TX

Review
"Historian Marrin (FDR and the American Crisis, 2015, etc.) writes with brutal honesty and conviction about a shameful period in American history. He constructs a detailed, well-researched narrative of horrific worldwide events leading up to the 'day of infamy'" —Kirkus Reviews starred review"With masterful command of his subject and a clear, conversational style, Marrin (FDR and the American Crisis) lays bare the suffering inflicted upon Japanese Americans by the U.S. during WWII."—Publishers Weekly starred review"As with Marrin’s Flesh and Blood So Cheap (2011) and FDR and the American Crisis (2015), this is a prodigiously researched, indispensable work of history, generously illustrated with period photographs. It belongs on every library’s shelves." —Booklist starred review "Packed with details yet well organized and carefully annotated, this excellent treatment of a shameful episode in U.S. history is highly recommended for library collections serving teens." —School Library Journal starred review

I was sorry to see the poor ratings of this book. I think it is important that people know it was written for Young Adults, and as such, does not go into great depth on everything to do with the subject. Also, because it is written for young people, there is a lot more background information than you would see in a book written for adults; one can't assume that kids know the same level of history. As an experienced high school librarian, I highly recommend this book. I think it would be a great novel for a social studies class to read together. For those of you still not convinced by my review, you should know that it received STARRED ratings from Booklist, School LIbrary Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publisher's Weekly, and Christian Library Journal.
Might be a good book for someone unfamiliar with the subject of Japanese-American internment during World War II. But it would have been better without the military and combat chapters because there were errors in several of them. Just as one example, the author makes it sound like the 442nd Regimental Combat Team landed in southern France at the same time as D-Day in Normandy. In fact, the invasion of southern France occurred two months after Normandy. Other better books on those military topics include Journey of Heroes and Just Americans, both with Japanese-American authors. But the discussion in "Uprooted" of "who was responsible?" for influencing FDR's decision for internment was interesting. And the author's suggestion that the history of Japanese exclusion and internment is applicable to today's discussion of limiting Muslim immigration and building a wall on the Mexican border ensures that the book is timely.
This book was full of mind blowing information about events that were a major part of U.S. history but a very minor part of our U.S. history education. This book systematically covered the beginning of major Asian nations, international economics, the development of WW2, and most importantly how the same racism we revile Hitler for was rampant in the US. This is an important read because we as a nation should understand the continued effects of this atrocity, and it indirectly teaches that we should work to understand people so that this type of systemic injustice is recognized and rectified.
I listened to this as an audiobook. Although parts of this book were interesting, it was not quite what I was expecting or what I hoped for. A good part of the book (about a third to half) discussed the history of Japan and also, China to a lesser degree. I was hoping for a lot more people's personal experiences before, during, and after the Japanese internment. For this reason, I can't give this more than 2 stars [on Goodreads], maybe 2.5, but good reads doesn't allow half stars to be reflected in each person's rating. Overall, I was disappointed in this book.
I was expecting to read a book regarding the Japanese American experience during World War II, an expanded version of the many personal stories written by individuals who suffered the indignity of it all. Unfortunately, Uprooted is more about racism in the United States and the world, instead of the extreme prejudice that Japanese Americans faced. Readers who are looking for information on how the concentration camps in the southern and western parts of the United States fit into the larger would view may gain some knowledge from this book. Readers who are looking for personal experiences should start with books such as To The Stars by George Takei.
