The second woman to be ordained as a rabbi (1974) and the first rabbi to become a mother, she and her husband, Dennis, were the first rabbinical couple to jointly lead a congregation―Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis. They have two children, David and Debora, and three grandchildren. I have shared this book with my children and given copies as gifts. It is beautifully illustrated. The author tells the stories of biblical women in a very modern and memorable way. This is a lovely tribute to women in the Old Testement that young girls will identify with.

So few books (still!) show women in Scripture and display them well; Sandy's story-telling genius gives females of all ages a new insight into their value before God!

Incorporation of Lilith in this book is misleading and potentially destructive to the plan God has for his people. Willis is not biblical in the inclusion of her in the story leads me to believe that this book if not appropriate for young and impressionable Christian readers. This is written by a female Jewish rabbi.Taken from the the following article (see link):"Lilith, while a fun legend, is not and never was part of the faith of Israel or the Church, so the story doesn’t go into scripture. In short, it wasn’t “edited out” because it was never in. One might as well wonder why the story of King Arthur was “edited out” of the New Testament. Lilith is a legend mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud (a rabbinic commentary on the Bible) that only starts to take firm shape in the 8th to 10th centuries.

Many of the lessons we all need to hear are best heard from the perspective of a child -- and by becoming childlike in our listening! These are the old stories so often over looked by our culture and our religious communities. A must to read to all children. A must to celebrate with the women of tomorrow! But I have used this book mostly with adults to re-enforce positive feminine lessons with a biblical back up they did not know exists. Let us continue to tell the stories! The author and illustrator do a beautiful job keeping the message alive!

Sasso has taken four "incomplete" little known stories from the Bible-- the stories of Lilith, Serach, Bityah and the Daughters of Z-- and filled in the blanks, so to speak. The result is a beautiful volume that is a pleasure to read.
