"Return to those thrilling days of rock 'n' roll yesteryear with Blake's engrossing chronicle of talent and excess. It's another one of those books that inhales you...Thought it's over 400 pages, it's the kind of book you'll rip through in a day. It's a thoroughly enjoyable read."―Creative Loafing Blog"Mark Blake clearly knows the British-rock-supergroup terrain."―Onion, AV Club"If you're a Queen fan, don't hesitate to pick this one up...[and] if you have even a passing interest in the story you should give this a shot. You really won't be disappointed."―Examiner.com"The most comprehensive bio to date about the over-the-top rockers...Blake's book effectively illuminates the band's story and music for both the casual fan and diehards."―Houston Press"Is This The Real Life? uses interviews with the people who knew the band best to piece together a Behind the Music-style biography. It's extensive and detailed...It's a worthy read."―Instinct"Blake manages to paint a far more detailed picture than some of his predecessors...Sparkling anecdotes throughout."―MOJO"A happy medium between fact and anecdote. Real Life rounds out the band's history with plenty of ripe minutiae and lost details...[A] colorful account."―Under the Radar

It's okay as an intro biography, but there's a lot of reused material here, particularly the chronicle of the early years, which seems to take up a disproportionate amount of space. If you've read other Queen bios, you've probably seen most of the interview quotes and heard most of the stories in this one. In addition, there are some glaring typos and a few blatantly untrue anecdotes that are repeated as fact. Blake's depiction of the bandmembers is quite flat, and they all (even Freddie) seem quite 2-dimensional in this narrative. It's neither an intimate biography nor a straightforward analysis of the albums and songs, and the book never quite works as a consequence. For the high Kindle price, I'd skip it.
This is not my first Band-related biography, with that in mind, this was interesting and easy to read. It goes into a lot of details of the previous bands the members were before forming Queen, that might have been the most tedious part, later on the emphasis on each album was informative and for some parts, eye-opening. I did like Queen before but didn't know lots of things until now and how the band worked together was very interesting considering lots of the other bands around the time. Overall, I think it is a worth reading book, not sure if its true entirely but very entertaining
The unparalleled success of the recent biopic of the British Rock Band Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody", has led to a revival in interest in Queen music and in particular their enigmatic and incredibly charismatic front man Freddie Mercury. This 2011 book provides behind-the-scenes looks into the lives of the band members by the use of interviews of friends and employees. Do not read it if you like the upbeat depiction of them all in the film. This book shows that they were all, and especially Freddie Mercury, flawed and struggling personalities. However, this book, along with the film, will provide a more rounded glimpse into one of the most successful and lasting rock bands of all time.
The book is OK, but doesn't match up to others. Kind of bla & repeats from other books as well as having some misinformation.
Way more tiny details than would make a good book. And then relatively little on Mercury's illness, how he coped with it, and how it affected Queen and those around him.
Anyone ask what you are reading you can simply respond with "I'm reading a GOOD BOOK" This penning by Mark Blake goes way back to either high school or community college years.Regardless this book will remind some of those years attending our community Battle of The Bands. So you've already read one possibly two Freddie bio's you will enjoy this book. Some details are accentuated just a bit more. There is not one Bio of this man that resembles another. Suppose that's due to the nature of our Divine Freddie Mercury.Really don't need to add that this book is FUN No surprises there since they pretty much all are again relying on the subject. And why we keep them to read over and over.
Wonderful biography. This was a gift for somebody else, a big fan. It arrived promptly and in good condition. Thank you.
I just finished reading this for the second time. Easy to read, well written, full of lots of details about the experiences of May, Mercury (Bulsara), Deacon, Taylor, on their way to becoming Queen. Very good book and I recommend it, probably the best Queen book I've read. (But if you read several books and watch documentaries, you will find discrepancies, this one included. Keeps you on your toes.)
